Gum Disease Treatment
Periodontal treatment is the treatment of periodontal diseases.
Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease. Inflammation of the gums is caused by a build up of plaque (a colourless film of bacteria) on the teeth. In time plaque hardens into tartar. If this is left untreated, a deep pocket can form between the teeth and gums, and plaque, tartar and debris collects in the pocket. Eventually, major damage to the tissues and bone supporting the teeth occurs, and in the worst cases, teeth are lost.
Periodontal treatment is expected to control or stabilise the disease to prevent potential loss of teeth in the future. It should reduce or eliminate symptoms such as bad breath and bleeding gums, and should also make oral hygiene techniques easier. If left untreated periodontal disease has been linked to more serious conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and diabetes.
